A ten months old child Tafsir who was in the arms of his aunt was literally crying hearing the round of applause. Yes, it was tears of joy. His mother had won the chance of buying a brand new three-bedroom townhouse in Ellicott City at a price much lower than the market rate.
On April 13, in the Long Reach high School atrium, Mohammed Islam and Rusella Mirza were declared the lottery winners. They were the first winners of the ‘Housing Lottery’ at Howard Country Housing Fair.
This annual lottery is the largest event at Howard Country Housing. On this occasion, 55 exhibitors come together to discuss regarding homeownership in Howard County. In this lottery, homeowners can buy homes at lower price than market value.
According to event organizer Tracy Gosson, there were 50 applicants for only two homes in the 2013 lottery and it’s a record. The applicants were pre approved and could only apply for any one of the homes.
Donna Heard the resident of Elkridge was the second winner. She also has the chance of buying a three-bedroom home in Elkridge. It has been heard that an employee of Howard County named Heard was the fourth name because the first three names were not present. According to Heard’s sister she was suppose to be the owner of the house.
The first winners Mirza and Islam had been residing in a rented flat in Ellicott City since two years. Theywere not looking to buy a home anytime soon because according to them it was impossible. Islam did not draw a huge amount as a postdoctoral researcher at Catholic University. Mirza is a former researcher and now she is focused on bringing up her two sons.
Suddenly through an email they were notified about the lottery and grabbed the chance. Mirza’s feeling was amazing as she came to know about the opportunity. From a rented house, they would now have their own property. She just loves the new place. The new house has three bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms and a garage and the total home is 1,682 square-foot and they bought it at $221,154. The couple expected more space in their house and this one is a huge upgrade.
‘Heard’ had been residing in Howard County for 25 years and she was very surprised to hear about the lottery. She presently stays in a rented property in Elkridge. Her three bedroom house in the Deep Run Park community is under construction. The $125,000 property features a swimming pool, playground and club house.
She is a security guard at the Gateway Building said that due to the high cost she was not able to purchase a home. Now she holds a part time position at her county but previously she used to work full time. Her friends in housing section had encouraged applying for the lottery but she never expected to win. She is a single mother and now she plans to move in to the house with her two sons of age 21 and 11.
