Following the state of New Jersey that Will Give an Option for Lottery Winners to Remain Anonymous, state of Michigan will also apply the same policy in order to protect the winners from some bad scams. It means that some lucky people such as Donald Lawson, $337 Powerball Jackpot winner can stay anonymous in order to protect himself.
Michigan senator Tory Rocca, R-Sterling Heights said that there is reasonable fear that the winners will be threatened because public know that they have quite a lot of money. He added that there have been many casualties related to lottery winners being intimidated, robbed, injured and even killed. The bill was passed last Thursday and now is in its way to be discussed by the full Senate.
The idea of keeping the lottery winners secret sounds good to give some protection but it can actually bring some negative effects too. When the winners choose to stay unnamed then people will not know the good news and the ticket selling might decrease. If it happens, the fund raised from lotteries will decrease as well and it is not really good for the education being funded.
In fact, everything is back to the winners, do you want to stay anonymous or tell the world if you scoop millions of dollars? You decide.
