The Greek Lotto is a traditionally drawn lottery game previously known as Lotto 649 because to get a jackpot prize the player must match 6 numbers out of 49. The six numbers is chosen from 1 to 49 and there are no duplicates. The jackpot will be rolled over into the next draw when there is no one who can match those six main numbers. That’s why, the more rollovers the higher the jackpot prize is. The game will finish when there is a player who wins the jackpot as the first prize. A player has 2 options to choose the numbers, first is by choosing his own numbers or taking the random numbers chosen by the generator machine. To take the second way a player needs to choose the “Random” option on the machine.
Lotto 649 was first introduced on December 5th 1990 in Greece by OPAP. OPAP (The Greek Organization of Football Prognostics) has become the biggest European betting firm and been acting as the Greek lottery Monopoly although it is still under the control and regulation of the Government of Greece. Lotto 649 was then changed into a game with totally different rules on January 26th, 2009. It started to have 5 different categories of prizes and the most significant change was the additional second category of prizes. This second prize category gives the chance to get 50,000 Euro. A player will get the second place winner when he can guess 5 main numbers plus an Additional Number. Claiming the winning will be within 3 months and the prizes will be given in the form of cash lump sum.
The Greek Lottery has been one of the hardest games in Europe and all over the world but due to the five different categories of prizes, a player has more chance to at least get any prize in any categories. The odds of winning the first prize category or the top jackpot are 1 in 13,980,000. The better odds are 1 in 2,330,000 for the second category. The odds of matching 5 main numbers are 1 in 54,201 to get the third category. For the fourth place, a player must beat the odds of 1 in 1,032. The fifth place will require a player to beat the odds of 1 in 57.
The Greece Lottery is drawn twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9 pm Greek time.
