Since its beginning in 1991 the Lottery has grown into a huge industry in Texas generating over $3 Billion in ticket sales by 2003. Now, almost 25 years after its modest beginnings, the Texan Lottery continues to draw its patrons from the length and breadth of Texan society.
History of The Texas Two-Step
November 1991 saw an amendment to the Texas Constitution authorizing the sale of lottery tickets in Texas for the first time. Initially this began with the sale of the "Lone Star Millions" scratch-off tickets. The Lone-Star Millions set two sales records with first day sales of 23.2 million tickets and first week sales of 102.4 million tickets. The game ended on February 1, 2004
The first, in-house drawing game began in 1992. It was called simply "Lotto Texas" and remains one of the only two twice weekly, in-house drawing games in Texas today, the second being the "Texas Two-Step".
Beginning in May 2001 the "Texas Two Step" set itself apart from its predecessor and competitor by being the only twice-weekly, in-house game to offer it’s jackpot prize as a lump sum only while the "Lotto Texas" required its players to choose either cash or annuity as payment when playing.
Playing The Texas Two-Step
The format for the Texas Two-Step has not changed since its beginning and is very simple in principal.
Four numbers, between 1 and 35 are chosen, and then a fifth, bonus number is chosen, also between 1 and 35. Each ticket costs $1 and the weekly draws are held each Monday and Thursday.
There are seven different prizes on offer, beginning with a guaranteed 45 for matching the bonus number up to the Jackpot prize for matching all five numbers.
How To Claim Your Prize
Any prizes valued at $599 or less can be claimed at any Texas Lottery retailer. Prizes valued at $999.999 or less can be claimed at any Lottery Claim Centre while anything higher in value must be claimed at the Texas Lottery Headquarters in Austin.
Prizes may also be claimed by mail. A claim form can be obtained from a retailer or by requesting a form directly from the Texas Lottery. The winning ticket must be signed and sent along with the claim form to the Texas Lottery Commission.
Winning tickets must be claimed within 180 days following the date of the draw.
