The Texas Lottery Commission controls every aspect of the Texas Lottery from their headquarters in Austin. Of all the games under its purview Lotto Texas remains the largest single generator of income after Instant Tickets. Back in 2003 Lotto Texas accounted for nearly 17% of all ticket sales.
History of Lotto Texas
Following the authorisation of lottery sales in Texas in 1991, Lotto Texas became the first “In-House Drawing” game. Ticket sales first started in November 1992 with the first jackpot being drawn that very same month.
Since its beginning Lotto Texas has undergone a number of changes to its format. Originally the jackpot prize was offered only as an annuity with no cash option available, this was changed within the first year of operation with a cash value option being added. Other changes that occurred were the addition of a second weekly draw, adding Wednesdays to the existing Saturday draw and the addition of a “Quick Pick” option which allowed customers to have their numbers randomly selected.
Playing Lotto Texas
Lotto Texas is based on a 54 ball structure with players choosing 6 numbers. The minimum prize requires 3 of the 6 numbers to match with those drawn. The cost to play is $1. In 2013 a new feature was added, the “Extra” option. This cost an additional $1 to utilize and consisted of a simple checkbox on the ticket.
The “Extra” option had no direct effect on game play itself; instead it impacted on the available prize structure. Now only 2 matching numbers are required to receive the guaranteed minimum win of $2, all of the remaining prizes are increased in value, up to but excluding the Jackpot itself.
How To Claim Your Prize
Any prizes valued at $599 or less can be claimed at any Texas Lottery retailer. Prizes valued at $2,500,000 or less can be claimed at any Lottery Claim Centre upon presentation of the ticket and a lottery claim form, while anything higher in value and all prizes that are to be paid out as an annuity must be claimed in person at the Texas Lottery Headquarters in Austin.
Prizes up to the value of $2,500,000 may also be claimed by mail. A claim form can be obtained from a retailer or by requesting a form directly from the Texas Lottery. The winning ticket must be signed and sent along with the claim form to the Texas Lottery Commission.
Winning tickets must be claimed within 180 days following the date of the draw.
